What is Role-Playing? I have no idea what RPing is. I don't know where to begin. I'm just not good at being creative or developing good characters. How do I get to be as good as that guy? Wow, he writes a lot; I could never write that much if I tried. My stories suck. I'll never get good. I'm just not cut out for RPing.

Any of that sound like you? Well, maybe not one of those, but if you're reading this guide, you must have some vested interest in improving your skills.

Intro

Before I start, it might help if I gave you some background on myself. Nothing major, just the pertinent stuff.

I've been RPing for about three or four years at the time of my writing this. I used to suck like you couldn't believe but I had some good teachers. I started taking interest in creative writing back in eighth grade (that'd be about five or six years ago) when I got this crazy idea for a novel. It wasn't anything special but it was a start. My best friend at the time and I swore we'd finish it. Alas, we never did and the dream didn't so much die as it evolved into something even better. Over the next few years, I all but mastered English grammar and my vocabulary still sucks but I'm improving. I grew a lot inside and began to take a vested interest in learning as much as I could (which is a great skill to have as a writer) even though I didn't do much reading (not such a great thing for a writer). However, I did watch a lot of TV shows and movies and I loved drawing. These hobbies, combined with my desire to learn and I suppose some inklings of creative talent allowed me to develop, I guess you could say, a gift for storytelling.

Early on in high school, I joined a forum called GUA and midway through I discovered Role-Playing in a section called the Battle Arena. I didn't know much about RPing or the game's rules but I did have a knack for writing (that was half the battle won). I read through the guides and made my first character profile. That's also where I met Illustrious (our admin). He was the first person to ever seriously critique my work and I hated the fucker for it, but in retrospect he was most helpful and remains most helpful to me in that regard.

Several years and a number of crituqes later, I went to other places, such as Althanas and got reviews there as well, but my time commitments were to the real world so I stopped RPing for a while. However, I didn't stop critiquing others or learning all I could. Eventually college came and I found myself with a bit more time. Illustrious and I developed The Pleiades Project together. And just recently I was able to RP again on a more constant basis.

(I'll finish this when I have more time.)

So let's start at the beginning:

What is Role-Playing?

Role-Playing (or RPing for short) is exactly as it sounds. You are playing a role.
